Antal International acquires office based staffing recruiter Smart Moves
The Milton Keynes-based recruitment business Smart Moves has joined Antal International’s network of more than 120 offices within 30 countries enabling Antal to drive further growth through access to a larger operational infrastructure, along with a wider portfolio of blue-chip clients.
The acquisition also presents the opportunity to potentially expand the Smart Moves brand in other locations and supports Antal International’s strategy to build its presence across the UK. It is an ideal partner for other Antal’s office professionals staffing agency Parkside Recruitment.
Established in 2000 by Managing Director Julia Hale and her co-founder Louisa Harris, Smart Moves places office-based personnel into a variety of temporary and contract roles across a number of business sectors. Smart Moves’ reputation and expertise will support Antal International’s growth, particularly in the placement of talent on a contract and temporary basis, which is increasing in prominence in the UK job market.
Following the completion of the transaction, Julia will continue as Managing Director with Louisa supporting the development of the business in a consultancy role. It will also work closely with another member of the Antal International group, Parkside Recruitment, which operates in similar sectors, to further strengthen Smart Moves position in the market.
The Smart Moves acquisition is one of the serial transaction deals which have been made by Antal globally. In 2008 the business sold its branch in Moscow, Russia to a private equity firm and in 2011 Antal acquired UK based Parkside Recruitment. In 2013 the international recruiter sold its Polish operations to the RPO and personal outsourcing company, Work Service and in 2013 Antal signed a joint venture deal with Career International, the largest ‘home grown’ recruitment business in China.
Antal’s Group CEO and Chairman Tony Goodwin commented on the recent acquisition saying “Welcoming Smart Moves into the Antal International Group is an essential part of our growth strategy across the UK. Through a planned programme of buy-to-grow acquisitions we aim to increase our multi-discipline offering by taking advantage of the talent and drive of recruitment businesses outside of London”.
“Having a presence in Milton Keynes is as essential as it is to be in Madrid, Moscow or Mumbai. The town is one of the fastest growing areas in the UK and Smart Moves position in the expanding and increasingly important temporary and contract employment market will be of real benefit to Antal.”

Antal International sells Poland arm in landmark deal
In the second deal of its kind for the business, the buyout will see contract, RPO and personal outsourcing company, Work Service, take over the management of Antal International operations in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Kracow. Having set up the Antal International brand 20 years ago, CEO Tony Goodwin, has been pivotal in the on-going growth of the global network, with a similar deal in Russia secured five years ago.
The Polish operation will continue to trade under the same brand name and will have access to the global network of the Antal International Group.
Tony Goodwin commented on the buyout; “This innovative and ground-breaking deal really highlights the success we’ve had in building a sustainable, credible and indeed pioneering global recruitment consultancy. When I first got on a plane twenty years ago and flew out to Poland to set up a solid brand, it was with the intention of creating a sustainable, long term company which is valuable to the local business and start up community. This is testament to our success in what many would agree has been a tough economy.”
“I’ve always been a keen player and I have a great loyal and hard-working team in Graeme Read, Paul Russell, Steve Case and the whole of London HQ.” he continued. “The team on the ground in Poland has worked hard to create a very strong business under the watchful eye of Managing Director, Artur Skiba, who has been with us 13 years to the day. This is a landmark stage in the on-going development of Antal International and I am both proud and delighted to be part of both this deal and the network as a whole.”
Antal International acquires Parkside from Ochre House
Parkside is a recruitment boutique with offices in Staines and Uxbridge which works with clients in both West London, Surrey and the Thames Valley region. Established in 1989, the company provides expert permanent and temporary recruitment and resourcing solutions to the accountancy and finance and office professionals markets. Parkside boasts a broad client base, from small local businesses to blue-chip companies and is widely regarded for it’s award winning client service.
The Parkside deal is Antal’s second acquisition this month. Earlier in July it acquired Beijing-based AGEC, a domestic Chinese recruitment company. Antal CEO and Founder Tony Goodwin commented on the deal saying
“Parkside is a really great business, the premier brand in it’s marketplace with excellent client feedback on the team’s efforts. It is pleasing that this our second equity acquisition this month was once again financed through our own resources.”
Ochre House, which was subject to a management buyout in 2006 backed by NBGI Private Equity, is a leading recruitment outsourcing and talent management business, which works with major corporations across the world.
Mike Ryall, Managing Director of Parkside Recruitment said “I am delighted Parkside are joining the Antal Group and we look forward to working closely with Tony, Graeme, Paul and the team to further enhance our brand. This move presents significant opportunity for the business to grow and for our people to develop their careers in an exciting and expanding organisation.”
Antal International sells its Russian subsidiary
International recruitment firm Antal International has signed a deal which will see its Russian operation run by FiveTen Group.
Commenting on the disposal, Antal’s Chairman and CEO, Tony Goodwin said: “This is a very exciting time for us and particularly for the team in Russia and shows what the market and our management team are capable of in building a business able to attract this calibre of investment”.
As the intention was to capitalise on Antal Russia’s market-leading position in the Russian executive recruitment space, Goodwin will continue to own and expand the rest of the Antal Group outside Russia with businesses in China, Middle East and Europe, as well as the franchise arm Antal International Network, which combined, employs over 500 professional staff in operations across 18 countries in Africa, India, Asia, Middle East, UK and Europe.
